Mathematical priority versus risk-management priority

At a weighted starting APR of 17.6%, delaying accelerated payoff has a visible cost. Reserve first keeps the debts at minimum payments for 4 months before applying the full extra amount. The split plan begins reducing principal faster, but takes 8 months to complete the reserve milestone. Neither makes the $600 disappear; the difference is where it works first.

The debt-first schedule assumes no new borrowing. If a necessary repair arrives while only $1,800 is accessible, the household may have to charge the expense and partially reverse its progress.
